Final Report – WP Credits Course

Introduction

Hello everyone!

My name is Marcos Herrera, and I’m excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. During this journey, I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of WordPress, contribute to the open-source community, and collaborate with people from different parts of the world.

Over the last few weeks, I dedicated more than 120 hours to learning, practicing, and contributing to WordPress. This experience allowed me not only to improve my technical skills but also to understand the importance of collaboration in open-source projects.

One of the most rewarding parts of this experience was contributing more than 500 translations to the WordPress ecosystem, helping make WordPress more accessible to users worldwide.

This report summarizes my contributions, challenges, learning process, and future goals within the WordPress community.

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

During the WP Credits course, I contributed mainly to the WordPress Translation and Community ecosystem.

Teams

  • Polyglots Team
  • Training and Documentation Resources
  • Community Contributors

Project Focus

My main focus was improving accessibility and localization through translations. I contributed by translating strings, reviewing translations, and helping improve the user experience for Spanish-speaking users.

I also spent significant time learning about:

  • WordPress administration
  • Theme customization
  • Plugins and site optimization
  • SEO basics
  • Gutenberg editor
  • Website structure and usability

Official Resources

  • WordPress.org Documentation
  • WordPress Contributor Handbook

Community and Mentorship

Throughout the course, I received guidance from mentors and community contributors who helped me understand:

  • Translation workflows
  • Best practices for contributing
  • Communication within open-source teams

The support from the WordPress community was incredibly valuable and motivating during the entire process.

Challenges and Solutions

1. Understanding the Contribution Workflow

At the beginning, one of the biggest challenges was understanding how contribution workflows worked within WordPress.

There were many tools, platforms, and processes involved:

  • Translation systems
  • Slack communication
  • Documentation guidelines
  • Contribution standards

Solution

I solved this challenge by:

  • Reading official documentation carefully
  • Watching tutorials
  • Practicing consistently every day

Over time, the process became much more natural.

2. Managing Time and Consistency

Another challenge was maintaining consistency while dedicating more than 120 hours to courses, learning resources, and contributions.

Solution

I organized my time by:

  • Setting daily learning goals
  • Tracking completed tasks
  • Dividing learning sessions into smaller blocks
  • Prioritizing practical contribution work

This helped me stay motivated and productive throughout the course.

3. Improving Technical Understanding

Some technical concepts related to WordPress, plugins, and the Gutenberg editor were initially difficult to understand.

Solution

I practiced directly inside WordPress installations, experimented with plugins and themes, and learned through trial and error. Hands-on experience became the best learning method.
